The role of the photographer’s body is central to the work. The artist’s intervention in photography conventionally takes place off the surface, the body distanced from the process. In contrast, painting is valued on the artist’s personal expression which takes place simultaneously with a physical interaction between artist and surface. Cameraless processes allow me to interact directly with the surface, exploring the boundary between painting and photography.

My body takes an active role in the process. The light-sensitive surface is treated as a canvas, my body used as a paintbrush.

Rather than capturing a decisive moment, time frozen in an image, the work is a trace of the process. The process is not hidden but made apparent through the chemical marks left on the surface, allowing an insight into the process.

The interaction is a private performance in which the viewer only has access to the aftermath, the trace of my gesture.
